Addictions are compulsive behaviors or substance uses that people can’t easily stop, despite harm to health, relationships or life. They often stem from unmet emotional or spiritual needs, like Carl Jung described – “a profound spiritual thirst for wholeness”. Jung saw narcotics and other addictions as symptoms of deeper psychic and spiritual needs and believed that true recovery requires a profound inner transformation rather than mere abstinence or external control.

Jung warned that ignoring or avoiding the unconscious leads to it controlling our lives indirectly, often through fate-like events or destructive patterns. He urged confronting it instead for true self-awareness. Some of his statements are –

“People will do anything, no matter how absurd, to avoid facing their own souls.”

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.“

“One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.”

Jung saw avoidance as a path to neurosis or projection onto others, while integration brings growth. He proposed “spiritus contra spiritum” – using a higher spirit (like genuine religious or transcendent experience) to counter the destructive one (alcohol, called “spiritus” in Latin). He believed only a real spiritual conversion or ego surrender could heal this void. Without addressing this root hunger, mere willpower fails.

Jung voiced the issue accurately – “a profound spiritual thirst for wholeness”. And how does one fulfill this spiritual thirst?

The solution to spiritual thirst is meditation. Meditation is what makes you whole and one thus quenching your spiritual thirst.

Meditation is the path to integration. Meditation sharpens your consciousness. This leads the individual to first understanding their sub-conscious and then their unconscious. This is what Jung refers to above – make the unconscious conscious. Meditation is not for when you are old or the after-life, it is for the present. Meditation will help you live an independent, pleasure filled life where every moment is a celebration.
