Entitlement: The Secret Trap That Steals Your Joy — And How to Escape It

Entitlement is defined as the feeling that you have the right to do or have what you want without having to work for it or deserving it, just because of who you are. It sounds ridiculous and is ridiculous but in the world today, entitlement is very much alive.

In simple terms, entitlement is – more, more, more – only for me, nothing for anybody else.

So should we all become entitled? After all, we will get what we do not deserve. But is that true? We take birth after birth to complete our Karmic obligations. And then, this shortcut of entitlement. Does it help us or work against us?

Let’s consider the worldly aspect of entitlement. Entitlement basically gives you what you do not deserve, and that is usually by depriving someone else. Thus, we have some individuals being a burden on other individuals. This creates a division that keeps growing out of sight, till a point comes when everyone (the burdened as well as the burdeners) gets affected in a negative way. By then, it is too late to undo the damage, and everybody suffers from the consequences.

Entitlement discourages personal responsibility. Entitled individuals tend to deflect blame and avoid accountability for their actions and responsibilities. Don’t get trapped in this sense of entitlement. It always ends in tears.

In today’s world, with all it’s distractions and stupidities, it’s very easy to slide into this sense of entitlement. So, how do we combat entitlement?

This is where meditation is of value. It changes our outlook on this world, from being a zero-sum game, to one of abundance and grace. Once the individual realises that life is a gift for him/her to experience and enjoy, their whole approach to life changes. One becomes free from all types of mental bondages and ideologies and lives every moment with full responsibility and gratitude.

Meditation increases your awareness of yourself, your surroundings, your circumstances. You start living consciously. This consciousness is what prevents you from slipping into disappointment, depression and despair and helps you live a beautiful and wonderful life.

Start your journey of meditation. An awakened conscious person lives life beautifully, without being a burden on anyone.
