Ideologies is the “Science of Ideas”. An ideology is a coherent set of beliefs, values and ideas about how society is and how it should be. It links explanations (“why things are this way”) with prescriptions (“what must change”) and identities (“who we are”). Ideologies shape how people understand the world, justify power and imagine the future. Ideologies have today taken over the mindspace of many individuals and many individuals now live for their favourite ideology rather than living for themselves.
Some common ideologies are capitalism, communism, liberalism, conservatism, nationalism, globalism, feminism, wokeism among others. One can see the intense fight people of differing ideologies have, just to prove to themselves, that they are better than the others.
Ideology in everyday life
Ideology is not limited to parties or manifestos; it permeates everyday life. Beliefs like “success is purely individual effort,” “markets naturally know best,” “The personal is political” or “Opposites attract perfectly” are all ideological statements, even if unstated. Media narratives, school curricula, religious teachings and workplace cultures all transmit ideological messages about who deserves what and why.
As ideologies simplify reality, they always leave something out. Becoming aware of ideology does not mean becoming free of it; rather, it means recognising that one always speaks from within some framework and that frameworks can be revised, contested or combined in more humane ways.
Are ideologies really needed? Is life for proving one ideology was better than the other?
Ideologies are needed when you wish to control people at large. Ideologies are used to maintain or change the power equations in society. One can subscribe to any ideology they like but remember ideology creates a boundary, that one then finds difficult to cross.
Meditation is the antidote to ideology. Meditation helps you think for yourself rather than just follow others blindly. Meditation makes you reflect if there are other ways to understand and resolve the situation.
As your meditation practice deepens, you will be more centered in yourself. This centering helps you live life as per your own terms and not anyone else’s ideology.
Live your life freely!
