Mass hypnosis refers to the phenomenon where a large group of people enters a hypnotic-like state, characterized by focused attention, reduced peripheral awareness and increased suggestibility. This state can be induced deliberately or unintentionally through various means such as charismatic leadership, persuasive speech, rhythmic music, constructed narratives or emotionally charged events. In such a state, individuals in the group may uncritically accept suggestions or ideas presented, forming a collective mindset or behavior pattern.
Mass hypnosis plays a role in various social and political contexts where leaders or events captivate public attention, leading to the people to believe or do things together without thinking carefully, following group ideas even if those ideas don’t always match the facts.
Mass hypnosis is used to keep people in a state of dissatisfaction and discontent. This makes it easier to control and manipulate them.
An example of mass hypnosis is Ahimsa or Non violence. Ahimsa has been fed to the people of India for many decades. The situation today is such, that even if a person knows they are going to be killed, they will offer themselves to be killed rather than fight back to save themselves. For in their mind and consciousness, they know no better. They have been trained to believe that this is the only way forward.
There are many more examples. And many more new techniques to induce mass hypnosis.
How do you go about getting people out of their mass hypnotic state and back to reality where they can think for themselves?
Meditation helps tremendously in this. Meditation increases your awareness and consciousness. This in turn, enhances your observational and critical thinking skills. You can think for yourself what is good for you, rather than be led to do something that is not beneficial for you, even if it is harmless at that moment.
Be aware, be alert. Live your life consciously. There is much you can do for yourself and the world without succumbing to plans and wishes of others.
