Poorva Punya – meaning “previous merit” or “accumulated good karma from past births” – is a foundational concept in Sanatan philosophy and astrology, shaping one’s destiny and life circumstances. It denotes the virtuous actions (Punya) performed in previous lifetimes, whose positive effects manifest in the present life.
Poorva Punya explains why individuals are born into vastly different circumstances: some enjoy birth in good families, financial security, intelligence, physical health and favourable opportunities, while others face challenges or disadvantages. These variations are not random but are outcomes of one’s Poorva Punya.
Poorva Punya is seen as a kind of spiritual inheritance, acting as a “storehouse” of good karma. This karma can bring auspicious events, happiness, sound health and beneficial relationships without apparent effort or cause, simply due to merit accrued in past lives.
Poorva Punya is not inexhaustible. In this life, it can be diminished or increased – both through actions.

The individual then either stagnates or starts doing activities that cause the rapid depletion of the Poorva Punya.
Why stagnate when there are so many opportunities to discover and grow yourself? Why indulge in activities that deplete you when there are options to advance spiritually while enjoying everything on this earth?
