Our senses are the gateways through which we experience the world. Sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell allow us to perceive and interpret our surroundings, playing a crucial role in our daily lives. Each sense contributes uniquely. Senses not only link us to the external world but also evoke emotional responses, trigger memories and shape behaviour. Appreciating our senses encourages mindfulness and deeper connections with ourselves and others. By being aware of our senses, we can fully engage and enjoy the beauty and complexity of life.
Shri Krishna said in The Bhagvad Geeta – senses are the horses, the body is the chariot, the mind is the reins and the person is the charioteer. If the senses are in control of the person, the horses move the chariot in the direction intended by the charioteer. The charioteer is then in command of all – the chariot, the reins, the horses and they all move as one entity.
So how does one keep the senses or horses in control? Especially when each sense or horse wants to run in a different direction. The answer is reins. A good charioteer knows how to use the reins to handle the horses. Similarly, in life, the individual who knows how to use the mind to handle the senses, their life is a joyous life!
Meditation is the means to understand yourself and your mind. Once you start understanding and knowing yourself and your mind, you will find that your senses start falling in line and doing what you want. Once your senses are in your control, then you stop doing unnecessary activities and free yourself to do what you really want and like. This becomes a self-reinforcing pattern/loop that helps the individual to do more in life and with enhanced pleasure.
Meditation may look difficult initially, but as one does a regular practice, it becomes easy and free-flowing. To the extent that one no more does meditation but becomes meditative. Being meditative is easier than you think.
