Tang Ping ( 躺平 ) is a Chinese term which literally means “lying flat.” It is a popular term among young people in China who reject the traditional rat race and intense work culture. Those who embrace Tang Ping choose to live a low-desire lifestyle, working only enough to meet basic needs and refusing to chase high-stress, high-paying jobs. This movement began gaining prominence around 2021 as a peaceful form of protest against societal pressure for relentless ambition and overwork.
Tang Ping reflects a mindset of opting out of the exhausting hustle to find personal contentment and mental well-being rather than strive endlessly for society-defined conventional success.
Some people think that this behaviour is unique to China. But it is not so. This has happened in the past and is happening in many societies and nations today as well. The scale in China is larger and is thus noticed easily.
Why is this happening? Is it a blowback against the political or societal or economic order? Or is it something else? How does one deal with it?
Tang Ping is nothing but the normal reaction to a society that has moved away from it’s core of being a society to becoming a workforce of automatons. Some people will willingly become automatons, but most will follow that path as they do not know better. And then somewhere, the tipping point is reached, and slowly people start rebelling against being automatons. And then you have a Tang Ping situation. People get totally disinterested in society and others.
The Flower Power movement that emerged in the 60s and 70s was the Tang Ping movement of its time. The trigger for that was the Vietnam War. The youth of that time did not want to be automatons for their political bosses. So they created a whole hippie counter culture to bring back society to its humane roots.
Why does this happen?
Society at its very basic concept, is an agglomeration of people. There is an order and structure to society that holds it together and within this structure, people have the freedom to live their lives as they want. There is no compulsion to live in a manner that is very different from what you want. This is a society with humanity ingrained in it. When society moves away from this concept and becomes a mass of automatons (for economic, ideological reasons or just brute force), then people start dropping out in their own way. This ultimately leads to the decay of society and nation, if no corrective action is taken in time.
What is the solution?
Meditation is the answer. A person who meditates is always in touch with their humane nature. Not everyone in society can meditate, but the people who do make a big difference. Meditation makes you more humane – first to yourself and then to others. As such, whenever you have a certain number of meditators in society, there is humanity and balance in that society.
Don’t waste your life by dropping out. Start your meditation journey. You will drop into life and live life on your own terms.
