Wetiko is an Algonquian (a group of Indigenous peoples in North America) term for a contagious psycho-spiritual disease of the soul. In its original context, Wetiko is referred to as a spiritual sickness or “mind virus,” representing the unconscious forces of fear, greed, ego and domination that cloud human awareness and disconnect us from our true nature.

The Core Characteristics of Wetiko are:

Insatiable greed without satisfaction
Constant consumption for its own sake
Conflict and destruction directed at other people, nature and even ourselves

Wetiko is not a real disease. It is a metaphor for harmful ways of thinking that lead people to become selfish, fearful and power-hungry. It weakens compassion, damages relationships and creates a sense of separation from others.

Wetiko grows stronger when people are driven by ego, materialism and the desire for power. It can show up in personal relationships through manipulation or exploitation and it can also be seen in societies and institutions that value control and profit more than people and the environment.

What makes Wetiko so dangerous is that people often do not realize they are influenced by it. It works through unconscious habits and beliefs, making harmful actions seem normal, reasonable or even right. It can lead people to benefit themselves by taking advantage of others while believing they are justified.

When people say, “History repeats itself,” some believe they are describing the repeated patterns of fear, greed and conflict that Wetiko represents.

The idea of Wetiko is not about blaming individuals. Instead, it encourages us to notice harmful patterns that can spread through people, cultures and institutions. The first step to overcoming Wetiko is becoming aware of it. Practices such as self-reflection, empathy, mindfulness and building genuine relationships can help replace fear and separation with compassion and connection.

In today’s world, filled with constant distractions and division, Wetiko can serve as a reminder to look within. Real change begins with our own thoughts, choices and actions. By choosing love instead of fear, service instead of selfishness and awareness instead of unconscious habits, we can bring healing to ourselves and those around us.

As our awareness grows, fear begins to fade and the feeling of separation is replaced by a sense of connection and unity.

As we heal ourselves, we also help bring more balance and compassion into the world – one conscious choice at a time.

Make the unconscious conscious. Live your life fully.
